Homeowner troubleshooting for a dryer that won't start

A dryer that won’t start is a common problem, and there are a variety of issues that might be causing it. So how can you determine the source of the problem?

Follow these simple steps before contacting a professional repair technician for your dryer and washer maintenance in Brisbane.
  • Power problems
You should first check if the circuit breakers and plug are working, so you need to ensure that the dryer’s two circuits are both turned on before moving to other parts. Although if the circuit breaker or fuse is functioning, the outlet might be the source of the issue. You can use a multimeter tester to check your outlet.

  • Thermal fuse
A faulty thermal fuse is one of the common issues of dryers, and this could be caused by a clogged dryer vent. The fuse is the primary safety device that protects the dryer from overheating. You can find the thermal fuse on your dryer’s housing or heat source. To test if this is really the issue, you’ll need to use a multimeter tester and check for continuity. If you notice there’s no continuity, then the thermal fuse should be replaced with a new one. It’s also essential to clean the vents before starting the dryer again.

  • Drive motor
The drive motor is an essential part of your dryer because it’s responsible for the drum to turn and the blower wheel to work. If you start your dryer and you hear a humming sound, but it’s still not working, you’ll need to check the drive motor. You can do this by removing the belt from the motor and using a clean cloth, and you should remove any obstructions from the blower wheel. However, if the wheel is already cleaned but it’s still not working, then it’s probably defective and needs replacing.

  • Dryer door switch
Another thing to check is the dryer’s door switch. When your close the dryer door, you should hear a click from the plastic peg, because this is the mechanism that will allow the switch to start the dryer.
When you notice the peg is broken or bent, you’ll need to replace or at least straighten it if it’s still possible. However, if the peg is in good condition, then the issue could be the switch, and it must be replaced by a qualified repair technician.

  • Main control board
Sometimes the main control board is the reason why your dryer won’t start. Although there’s no easy way to determine if it’s functioning or not, if there are visible signs of burning or a shorted-out component, then it’s most likely the cause of the problem.

What to do if your dryer is still having issues
After doing the remedies we’ve suggested above, but your essential home appliance is still not starting, then it’s time to call a professional dryer repair provider.
